Of Continuing Interest

• On July 1, 1998, all contents of the children with DIABETES web site were moved to the childrenwithdiabetes.com domain. The web server will automatically redirect requests for a file hosted at castleweb.com to the file at childrenwithdiabetes.com.

• At the same time, the "Ask the Diabetes Team" section was completely reorganized. You can use the URL Finder to help you find Diabetes Team questions that are referenced from outside the Children with Diabetes web site.

New This Week

• JDF Legislative Alert: Action Needed to Support NIH Funding Bill.

• We review Outsmarting Diabetes: A Dynamic Approach for Reducing the Effects of Insulin-Dependent Diabetes by Richard S. Beaser, M.D., which explains the importance of intensive therapy and how to do it.

• We review Diabetes Care Made Easy by Allison Nemanic, RN, BA, Gretchen Kauth, RD, CDE, and Marion J. Franz, MS, RD, CDE, a good introductory book for newly diagnosed kids and young teens with diabetes.

• The Featured Book of the Week is Stop the Rollercoaster: How to Take Charge of Your Blood Sugars in Diabetes by John Walsh, P.A., C.D.E., Ruth Roberts, M.A., and Lois Jovanovic-Peterson, M.D.

• The Human Biological Data Interchange is a not-for-profit organization that helps researchers find families with strong genetic tendencies towards diabetes and other diseases. They are seeking families with more than one child with diabetes. If you are interested, you can download the diabetes questionnaire or the kidney complications questionnaire. You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print the documents.

• Information for Classmates: Diabetes and Insulin Reactions by Pam Wilson is a nice overview of diabetes that your child can take to school and share. If you have information that you send to your child's class and want to share it, see How to Contribute for instructions.

• Inclusion of Students with Special Needs is a web site with a database of information to help parents and teachers in Washington State.

• Pricking Fingers, a web site about diabetes in Australia, includes information about camps in New South Wales for children and adolescents with diabetes.

• DIDMOAD by Joy Koenig, MD, discusses Wolfram Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder also known as DIDMOAD (Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy, and Deafness).

• Promoting Oral Health Among Diabetics by Edmund Julian L. Ofilada, D.D.M., a dentist in the Philippines, discusses the importance of proper dental care.

• Info MedicWatch is a new medical identification product that attaches to a watch band.
